The situation

Bali's main landfill is closing. Now.

Suwung TPA — Bali's largest landfill, sprawling across 32 hectares in South Bali — officially stopped accepting organic waste on 1 April 2026 and is heading toward complete, permanent closure. Since restrictions came into force, illegal dumping and trash burning have increased sharply across the island.

There is no replacement facility ready. The waste-to-energy plant intended to take Suwung's place won't be operational until 2028. Every hotel, restaurant, and cafe on the island now needs to manage its own waste — or have nowhere to send it.

The Indonesian Ministry of Environment has made clear that criminal sanctions — not just fines — are now on the table for non-compliance.

Here are the things most properties ask before they start.

How much does it cost — and is it worth it?

The Quick Start is a fixed-rate engagement — you know exactly what you're investing before you begin. Think of it as a one-time cost to make sure you have the right infrastructure and processes in place to properly manage your waste and stay compliant. For the full Zero Waste program, the fee varies by property scope and starting point; savings from diverted waste and recovered materials are possible depending on how far you take it.

We don't have a sustainability team. Can we still do this?

Yes. Eco-Mantra handles the system design, the contractor introductions, and the staff training. Your team doesn't need prior sustainability knowledge — that's precisely what the program provides. We work around your operations, not against them.

We already separate our waste. Would we still benefit?

Almost certainly. Separation is a good start — but two questions matter just as much: how well is it actually working, and where does the separated waste go from there? Most properties find gaps in their separation system, and many are still sending a large portion to landfill via contractors who don't genuinely recycle it. The audit maps your full waste stream, identifies what can be done better at source, and connects you with off-takers who will actually close the loop.

What results can we realistically expect?

The math is on your side: 60% of typical hospitality waste is organic and fully compostable, and most inorganic material can be recycled. A basic, well-implemented system should divert 70–80% of waste from landfill. A fully optimised one — like Waterbom Bali and Potato Head Bali — reaches less than 1%. The audit establishes your baseline and sets a realistic target, so you know from the start what the journey looks like for your specific property.
